Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University volleyball team battled back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Livingstone College in five sets 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11) in the first match of a doubleheader Friday night from Capel Arena. In the second match, the Lady Broncos swept Benedict College in three sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-21) to improve to 15-15 overall.

FSU has won three consecutive matches and are 9-1 against CIAA opponents. Livingstone falls to 12-7 overall on the season and 7-2 in the conference. The Lady Tigers of Benedict College drop to 7-11 overall.

The Lady Broncos faced Livingstone Friday evening from their rescheduled September 22nd cancellation. FSU picked up the first set with a strong offensive attack. Fayetteville State produced 11 kills as a team in their 25-20 first set win. The Lady Blue Bears rebounded in the second and third sets to pull out close wins, 25-22 and 25-23. The Livingstone squad had 22 kills collectively in the two sets.

Fatigue may have set in for Livingstone as they dropped the fourth and fifth sets by scores of 25-17 and 15-11, respectively. Fayetteville State had 15 kills in the fourth set alone, while LC only had 13 kills in the final two sets.

Junior middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson led the attack for FSU with 16 kills, five blocks, and five digs. Junior utility Cailee Huffman had 11 kills and 15 digs for the Lady Broncos in the win against Livingstone. Jefferson hit .343 against LC (16 kills, four errors, 35 total attacks). Sophomore setter Achari Mainor handed out 35 assists while collecting nine digs.

In the FSU's second match-up, the Lady Broncos quickly dispensed of the Benedict squad in three sets. Fayetteville State tallied 41 kills in the three sets, while the Lady Tigers threw down just 21 kills and committed 19 attack errors.

Jefferson, current CIAA Player of the Week, led the way again 15 kills, two service aces, and .370 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Meeks added eight kills and 11 digs for the Lady Broncos. Mainor had five service aces to go along with 35 assists and seven digs, while Huffman added nine kills and eight digs.

The Lady Broncos are back in action Wednesday, October 15th when they host Shaw University at 6 pm. FSU is currently in first place in the CIAA Western Division at 5-0.
