Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University returned to Capel Arena Tuesday evening and remained unbeaten at home this season with a 69-58 victory over Virginia Union University.
Coming into this contest, the Lady Broncos were in the mist of a six game losing streak and had faced their last nine opponents on the road. To make matters worse, Head Women's Basketball Coach Eric Tucker had to prepare his team to compete without three of his usual starters. Senior forward Tenisha McArthur, junior guard Jamara McMillan, and sophomore guard Antoinette Smith would all sit out this game with injuries.
However, senior guard Leticia Dickson stepped in and carried FSU in the opening period. Dickson hit four of the nine three-pointers she attempted and scored 16 of the teams' 32 first half points. After a see-saw beginning, the Lady Broncos went into the locker room at halftime up 32-28.
Fayetteville State went on an 8-2 scoring run in the first two and a half minutes of the second half. Dickson continued to be a problem for the Lady Panthers' defense. The 5'4 floor general drove inside the lane and released a floater that put FSU up 48-37 with 12:12 left to play. The Lady Broncos maintained their advantage through much of the second half and coasted to a 69-58 win.
Dickson would finish the contest with a game-high 28 points, along with seven rebounds and 3 assists. Freshman forward Erica Gilley was also a high contributor, adding 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
FSU outscored Virginia Union in the paint 16-4 and scored 28 points off 26 Lady Panther turnovers. With the victory, the Lady Broncos improves to 6-6 overall, 3-1 in the CIAA, and 3-0 at home.
Fayetteville State will put their flawless home record to the test again on Thursday, January 10th as they face the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm inside Capel Arena.
