Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University made an improvement in the standings with a 95-80 win over St. Paul's College Saturday afternoon inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
In the first half, the Lady Broncos were on the offensive attack. FSU dominated the Lady Tigers inside, outscoring St. Paul's 30-10 down in the paint. SPC was also outscored in transition by a ratio of one-to-three (24-8 points). Fayetteville State forced St. Paul's to commit 21 first half turnovers, which they converted into 22 points.
Sophomore guard L' Oreal Price and freshman forward Erica Gilley were the leading scorers for the Lady Broncos with 10 points apiece in the opening period. Despite the Lady Tigers shooting 42.3% from the field compared to the 36.2% shot by the Lady Broncos; FSU led at halftime, 43-32.
After the half, Fayetteville State continued to click on all cylinders. By the 13:35 mark, FSU had expanded their lead to 26 points (largest lead of the contest). St. Paul's had small spurts of offense to narrow the Lady Broncos' advantage; however they would never overcome the deficit.
FSU had six players finish with double-digit point totals and forced St. Paul's to commit 38 total turnovers for the contest. Price set the pace with 18 points and five rebounds, followed by freshman center Tiffany Haywood with 15 points and eight rebounds, along with Gilley's 14 points and six rebounds.
The victory improves Fayetteville State's overall record to 12-7 and 8-2 in the CIAA. St. Paul's drops to 7-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play. FSU captured both games in the season series between the two schools.
The Lady Broncos will attempt to extend their winning streak to six games when they take on the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University Thursday, January 31st. The contest is scheduled to take place at 5:30 pm inside the Capel Arena.
