Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University returned to Capel Arena Thursday evening and earned an impressive 71-55 win over Virginia State University in women's CIAA basketball action.
In the first half, both teams fought and kept the score close. Senior guard Leticia Dickson scored 11 of the Lady Broncos' 26 points in the opening period. Virginia State outplayed FSU in the paint; scoring 12 points inside compared to six by Fayetteville State. The Lady Trojans also play well in transition in the first half, outscoring FSU eight to two in fast break points.
The Lady Broncos went into halftime down 29-26, despite their shortcomings in certain statistical categories.
At the 8:13 mark in the second half, Fayetteville State went on a 12-2 run to put them up 58-47. FSU controlled the tempo for the remainder of the contest, even pushing the lead to 20 late in the half before closing out game with 71-55 victory. The Lady Broncos scored 28 points off 29 Virginia State turnovers.
Dickson led all-scorers with 22 points; her fourth consecutive game as the Lady Broncos' leading scorer. Freshman forward Mercedes Humphries added 11 points, while junior forward Shacovia Sheppard contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
With the win the Lady Broncos improve to 7-6 overall, 4-1 in the CIAA, and ignite a two-game winning streak.
Fayetteville State hits the court to face Johnson C. Smith University Saturday, January 12th inside Capel Arena. Tip-off is schedule for 5:30pm.
