LADY BRONCOS SPLIT MATCHES IN PFEIFFER INVITATIONAL

Misenheimer, NC - Fayetteville State University's volleyball team split their two matches Saturday at the Pfeiffer University Volleyball Invitational Tournament. In their first match of the evening Fayetteville State University defeated Columbia College in four games (30-28. 29-31, 30-28, 30-21). With the win the Lady Broncos improve to 3-4 for the season.

Freshman Chekimbrell Jefferson (Laurel Hill, NC) led the Lady Broncos balanced attacked with a double-double (23 kills and 12 digs). Senior defensive specialist Sha'Quana Veney had 17 digs, while freshman outside hitter Samantha Meeks (Laurinburg, NC) and senior middle blocker Cassandra Peterson (Winston-Salem, NC) both had 10 kills. Meeks also had a double-double (10 kills, 15 digs) and Peterson had six total blocks. Freshman setter Achari Mainor (Antioch, CA) provided 47 assists.

In the second match of the evening, the Lady Broncos forced Coker College into five games before falling 3-2 (21-30, 24-30, 16-30, 30-25, 15-9). The Lady Broncos returned home with a 3-5 overall record. Highlighting the hard fought contests were freshman middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson with 18 kills, defensive specialist Sha' Quana Veney 26 digs, Also making an significant contributions were freshman outside hitter Samantha Meeks eight kills and 10 digs, senior middle blocker nine kills and six total blocks and freshman setter Achari Mainor 41 assists.

"I was very proud of the team's performance in this tournament," said coach Elorine Hill. "We are making steady process as a team, and this week we were able to gain a lot of confidence while playing well."

The Lady Broncos travel to UNC-Pembroke Wednesday, September 5, 2007 for a non-conference match. They open the CIAA season at home Friday, September 7 against Saint Augustine's College.
