Currently, the Lady Broncos are in the midst of a tough road schedule, having played their last four games on the road. Saturday, Fayetteville State University continued their difficult journey, taking on Bowie State University at the A. C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, MD and was victorious, 101-89.
Fayetteville State played pretty tight in the first half, shooting 35.9 (14-39) percent from the field, and facing a deficit at halftime, 44-41. Turnovers were a direct result for Fayetteville State's success in the second half. The Lady Broncos forced 22 Bowie State second half turnovers, and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 46-10 in points off turnovers. Their shooting percentage improved to 55.6 (20-36) percent in the second half.
FSU's bench provided a solid contribution all game, outscoring BSU's bench 41-19. Freshman guard Jocabia Lucas was a huge spark off the bench for the Lady Broncos. Lucas had a team-high 17 points, including going five for seven from the free throw line. Four starters finished in double figures for points. Jamara McMillan had 17 points to go along with seven assists, Chelsea Jeter scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Tenisha McArthur pitched in 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Deana Wooten finished with 12 points.
Bowie State junior, Allyson Swailes reached a milestone in her collegiate career scoring her 1,000th career point. Teammate Markeya Watson had a phenomenal game despite the loss, scoring 24 points and bringing down 22 rebounds, both career-highs.
Bowie State turned the ball over a total of 36 times, equaling a season-high which ironically also occurred against Fayetteville State (1/11/07). The win gives FSU a season sweep over BSU and improves the Lady Broncos to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the CIAA. Bowie State falls in the standings to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in the CIAA.
