Box Score
With only a few ticks left on the clock, Fayetteville State's Jamel Austin went baseline and hit an off balanced jumper leaving 7 second remaining, and lifting the Broncos to a 71-70 victory over the Elizabeth City State University inside the RL Vaughan Center.
This was a see-saw match up from the beginning. There were 16 lead changes and 9 ties, so it wasn't surprising that the game was determined in the final minute. Fayetteville State gained an early advantage, going into halftime up, 42-35. Thanks in part to their ability to get points in transition. The Broncos outscored Elizabeth City 14-0 in points off fast breaks and 21-15 in points off turnovers.
In the closing minutes, the Broncos were ahead 69-66 when a lay-up by ECSU's C.J. Pigford with 1:29 remaining cut the lead to one. The Vikings would get the ball back with 54 seconds left and earned their final lead of the night (70-69) on a jumper by Anthony Butler with 31 seconds left. Andy Gebru was fouled and sent to the free throw line for two shots. Gebru missed both but FSU got a second chance when DeMarcus Bowden managed to grab the offensive rebound and set Austin up for the game winning jumper.
Gebru led all Bronco scorers with 13 points while Eric Houston and Hazael Andrew each pitched in with 10 points. Austin finished with only 6 points, but he was 100 percent from the field (3 for 3), including the game winner.
Elizabeth City State's C.J. Pigford scored a game high 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Teammates Anthony Butler and Mike Land contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Broncos improve to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the CIAA, while Elizabeth City's record falls to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in the CIAA.
