Thursday evening's game between the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos and the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University was the tale of two halves. Virginia State prevailed over the Lady Broncos 87-80, inside Daniel Gymnasium on VSU's campus. Off first glance, most would attribute the win to Virginia State's ability to get to the free throw line. In the second half, VSU had an overwhelming 43 free throw attempts to the Lady Broncos 18.
The contest was close in the first half with Fayetteville State going into halftime with a three point lead (30-27). Jocabia Lucas started the second half with a lay-up that increased FSU's lead to 32-27. From that point, the referees' whistle made it a struggle for the Lady Broncos. Virginia State guard, Katania Walker was the leading scorer with a game-high 33 points, 14 of those points were free throws. Monique Mason had a great game in the paint for the Lady Trojans, adding 18 points and 15 rebounds. Walker and Mason were the only players that finished with a double-digit point total for Virginia State.
By the 14:06 mark of the second half, Virginia State had a 17 point lead. The Lady Broncos began to chip away at lead with the solid, consistent play of Chelsea Jeter and Rebecca Charles. Jeter finished with a team-high 19 points, along with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Charles also finished with a double-double, adding 13 points and 10 rebounds (nine offensive). The Lady Broncos out-rebounded Virginia State 57-47, outscored VSU 40-26 in the paint, and doubled their 13 point second chance opportunities with 26. Sophomore guard Jamara McMillan, who normally orchestrates the offense, was plagued by foul trouble. McMillan had 12 points, nine rebounds, and five steals before fouling out in the second half.
The upset of the seventh ranked Lady Broncos in the South Atlantic Region marks their overall record at 15-9 and 11-6 in the CIAA. Virginia State University moves up to 4-12 in the CIAA conference and 7-16 overall.
The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos will play their last home game of the season against Johnson C. Smith University, Tuesday, February 20th inside the Capel Arena. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
