The Trojans of Virginia State University made a clean sweep against Fayetteville State University for the 2006-2007 Season, defeating the Broncos 84-62 and dropping them into sixth place in the CIAA standing. The top five teams with the best conference record will receive a first-round bye for the 2007 CIAA Basketball Tournament. FSU (14-10 overall and 10-7 in the CIAA) trailed the Trojans at halftime 45-34. The Broncos kept the game close for 7:29, leading 23-20. A three point basket by Michael Askew tied the score at 23-23 and a free throw by Michael Johnson at the 6:30 mark put VSU up 24-23, giving them a lead they would not relinquish.
The Trojans made it difficult for the Broncos after halftime, starting out with a 17-1 run, 11 minutes into the second half. Four VSU players scored in double-figures. The Trojan had 21 points off turnovers. Virginia State's leading scorer was Jamar Fleming, who had a game high 17 points, which included 3 for 3 shooting behind the three point line. Avis Wyatt was all over the court, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Trey Mines and Brian Henderson, both contributed to the VSU scoring with 11 points apiece.
The Broncos had two players with double-figure scoring totals. Jesse Fells provided an offensive boost midway through the second half, finishing with 12 points. Andy Gebru, who did not play in the second half had 11 points. The Broncos struggled, only managing 37 percent shooting from the floor, including 7-19 from the three-point arc. Virginia State hit 50 percent (31-61) from the floor and 47 percent (8-17) from the three-point range.
The Broncos will play their last home game of the season Tuesday, February 20, 2007 against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
