Salisbury, NC - The Lady Broncos ended regular season play with a 3-0 (30-13, 30-20, 30-20) win over the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears at Trent's Gymnasium Thursday evening. The win (21) left FSU one shy of equaling the most wins in a single season; which was established in 1996 when the team finished 22-14. The 1996 season was also the first time the CIAA Volleyball Championship was captured by Fayetteville State University.
The performance from Achari Mainor, a freshman setter from Antoich, CA, set the tone for FSU win. In the match she had 34 set assists, becoming the first FSU volleyball player to gain 1000 assists in a single season.
Another freshman to enter the Fayetteville State University Volleyball record book is Chekimbrell Jefferson. The native of Laurel Hill, NC obliterated Josephine Prince's record of 274 kills in a single season. Jefferson's 13 kills gave her 380 kills for the season with tournament action getting under way November 8th.
The Lady Broncos were perfect in conference and divisional play, going 13-0 in the CIAA and 8-0 in the Western Division. The title gives Coach Elorine Hill two titles in one season (tennis and volleyball).
Fayetteville State University will enter next week's CIAA Double Elimination Tournament top seed in the Western Division. Pool play will begin at 9:00 am on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
