Fayetteville,NC - The Lady Broncos opened up their season Saturday afternoon with an 80-73 victory over the visiting Lady Jaguars of Augusta State University inside Capel Arena.
With guard Chelsea Jeter out for the season with an ACL injury; Coach Eric Tucker put a combination of experience and youth on the floor to match up against Augusta State. Sophomore, transfer L' Oreal Price was the leading scorer for the Lady Broncos in her first game in the royal blue and lily white. Price contributed 16 points (shooting 70%), four rebounds, and four steals.
Jamara McMillan, one of the leaders in the CIAA last season in steals, was up to her old ways with a game-high five steals along with seven points and six rebounds.
The Lady Broncos were up going into halftime 34-29, and maintained in the second half with scoring in the paint. Fayetteville State outscored Augusta State 42-28 inside the paint. Thanks to the contributions of senior Tenisha McArthur and freshman Erica Gilley establishing a presence inside for the Lady Broncos. McArthur had the game's only double-double performance scoring 12 points and snatching 12 boards; while Gilley dropped 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Fayetteville State is off to a 1-0 start for the 2007-2008 season, and Augusta State falls to 0-1. The Lady Broncos will be under the lights of Capel Arena again for their next contest versus the Lady Braves of UNC-Pembroke. The match-up takes place Tuesday, November 20th at 7 pm.
