RALEIGH, NC - The Broncos were out gained in offensive total yardage 362 to 166, but not outscored, trumping Saint Augustine's College 13-10 Saturday in a CIAA Western Divisional match-up.
Senior place kicker Eric Lamoureux put the first points on the board with a 27-yard field goal; the score gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead and completed a nine play 35 yard drive in the opening quarter. FSU increased their lead after junior Bryan Hardy threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver Elijah Sessoms.
The Falcons responded with a score of their own; when tailback Arnold Mullins capped off a 38 yard drive with a 4 yard TD run. After the extra point, the score was 10-7 and would remain the same going into halftime.
St. Augustine's tied up the game and broke the scoring drought in the third quarter with a 22 yard field goal from place kicker Adison Daniels. On the Broncos' ensuing possession, the offense moved the ball down the field and put Lamoureux in place for a 23 yard field goal. The made field goal completed a 59 yard drive and put FSU up 13-10, which turned out to be the winning points.
The victory wasn't sealed until sophomore linebacker Anthony Wall intercepted a pass deep inside Bronco territory, ending St. Augustine's drive with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Throughout the game, the Falcons gave up 149 yards on 15 penalties. FSU's defense allowed 362 total yards, but forced two turnovers. On the flip side, the Broncos only put up 166 yards of total offense and had no turnovers in the contest.
The victory improves the Broncos' overall record to 2-5 and moves them to .500 in the CIAA at 2-2. The Falcons fall to 1-6 overall and drop to 1-3 in the conference.
Fayetteville State returns to Jeralds Stadium for their next game versus Shaw University. This will be the 2007 Homecoming Game for the Broncos; kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
