Senior forward Rebecca Charles scored a team-high 18 points in Fayetteville State University's win over Elizabeth City State University 101-86 on Saturday Evening, January 20, 2007 at the Capel Arena.
The loss was the first for the Lady Vikings in conference competition, the team moves to 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the CIAA. The Lady Broncos led 56-38 at the half but ECSU's Tiffany Smith was determined to keep her team in the game. Smith finished the game 37 points, including 13 out of 16 made free throws, and 12 rebounds. ECSU standout Celeste Trahan got into early foul trouble which limited her minutes in the game. Trahan fouled out midway through the 2nd half and only finished the game with three points.
The Lady Broncos did an outstanding job with ball movement; which allowed for open shots and caused the defense to struggle. Sophomore guard Chelsea Jeter had a double-double for FSU with 12 points and 15 rebounds (nine on the offensive side). FSU had five total players with double figures in points, including junior Shacovia Sheppard who pitched in 15 points and nine rebounds.
With the win, the Lady Broncos improve to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the CIAA. The Lady Broncos next game will be in the Capel Arena, January 23rd against Livingstone College. The tip-off starts at 5:30 pm.
