Vernia Wilson is a highly accomplished track and field coach with a rich history of success both as an athlete and a mentor. As a student-athlete at North Carolina A&T State University from 1993-1997, Vernia excelled as a thrower on the track & field team. She dominated the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) shot put events, winning the title seven out of eight times during her collegiate career. She was the conference outdoor champion in the shot put for four consecutive years (1994-1997) and the indoor champion for three years starting in 1995. In 1996, Vernia broke the MEAC indoor records in both the shot put and discus. Her outstanding performances earned her the women's indoor track and field MVP award for two consecutive years. Her contributions were pivotal in 1995 when the Aggies secured their first and only MEAC outdoor championship.
Since May 2000, Vernia has been the Head Coach of the Jr Striders Track & Field Club, where she has dedicated over 24 years to planning practices and meets, teaching techniques, and ensuring the safety and health of her athletes. Her role is strictly voluntary, showcasing her passion and commitment to the sport and her athletes.
In addition to her coaching career, Vernia has an extensive professional background. She served as a Transportation Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation from July 2008 to January 2017, where she was involved in federal-aid highway planning, research programming, and budgeting procedures. She also worked as a Processing Assistant IV at the North Carolina Department of Revenue and as a Billing Supervisor at Exel Logistics.
Vernia holds a Master's degree in HR Management from Strayer University and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University. She is also an active member of the Order of Eastern Stars, contributing to various community fundraising events and projects.
