A steady presence in the Fayetteville State men's golf lineup, Donald Barnett has developed into one of the Broncos' top performers through consistent improvement and leadership. The senior from Antioch, Illinois, has steadily lowered his scoring average each season while helping Fayetteville State compete for CIAA championships and regional postseason opportunities.
Barnett arrived at Fayetteville State after a standout career at Antioch Community High School, where he was a two-time Illinois State Championship qualifier. He quickly made an impact at the collegiate level, earning BCGCA All-Freshman Team honors and establishing himself as one of the program's promising young golfers.
His progression has been evident throughout his collegiate career. As a freshman in 2023-24, Barnett posted a 78.32 scoring average across 20 rounds and recorded a season-best even-par performance at the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational. He elevated his play during the 2024-25 campaign, lowering his scoring average to 77.64 while finishing ninth at The Rendleman and placing 15th at the CIAA Southern Division Tournament. Barnett continued his upward trajectory during the 2025-26 season, posting a career-best 77.11 scoring average over 30 rounds while climbing into the top 900 nationally and top 70 in the region.
Among his top collegiate performances was a third-place finish at The Hampton Farms Intercollegiate in April 2026, the first top-three finish of his career. He later turned in a strong showing at the CIAA Conference Championship, placing 10th overall, and represented Fayetteville State at the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional.
Off the course, Barnett is pursuing a degree in Sport Management and plans to continue his education through a master's program while pursuing a career in sports performance coaching. He serves as the men's golf team's representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), demonstrating his commitment to leadership and service within the department.
Barnett credits his motivation to the opportunity to represent both his family name and Fayetteville State University. Known among teammates for his pre-round playlist featuring Drake, Lil Wayne, and country music, he brings a focused and competitive mindset to every tournament. His favorite activities away from golf include traveling to college football venues and exploring local restaurants, combining two of his passions: sports and discovering new places.
Barnett chose Fayetteville State for the opportunity to compete for championships at both the conference and national levels. He values the university's access to premier golf courses throughout North Carolina and the competitive environment that has helped shape his growth as both a student and an athlete. As one of the Broncos' veteran golfers, he continues to play an important role in the program's pursuit of success on the regional and national stage.
