Dr. Jim Mergy is a native of Los Angeles, California. After moving to Fayetteville in 1993, he has taught the annual Sports Medicine Rotation for the Duke/Southern Regional AHEC family medicine residents and students. For about 20 years, he has provided pre-participation and medical evaluations for FSU student-athletes and staff.
Dr. Mergy graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of California, San Diego, where he also competed on the Intercollegiate Basketball Team. He then attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco while participating on the UCSF Club Intercollegiate Basketball team for 4 more years.
After medical school, Dr. Mergy completed his Family Medicine Residency at UCLA. While at UCLA, Dr. Mergy had the opportunity to train under several of the United States Olympic Committee team physicians, including the Head Team Physician for the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul, South Korea, and the Medical Director for Major League Baseball.
Dr. Mergy currently has faculty appointments from Duke University, Campbell University and Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to full-time clinic and faculty duties, he has a special interest in procedural medicine and non-orthopedic evaluation of sports injuries. Dr. Mergy provides pre-participation exams and consultations for several local high schools, in addition to FSU. Other special interests include Concussion Management and Evaluation for local high school and FSU athletes. Additionally, Dr. Mergy has trained and regularly uses Musculoskeletal Ultrasound to help diagnose sports injuries and other chronic ailments of the musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Mergy is very happy to be associated with the great staff and student-athletes at Fayetteville State University.
