FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team continues to strengthen its postseason résumé as the Broncos maintain a competitive position in the NCAA Division II postseason rankings, with the NCAA Power Index (NPI) serving as a key factor in determining regional tournament selection and seeding.
The NCAA recently adopted the NCAA Power Index (NPI) as the official selection metric for Division II team sports, including women's volleyball. The NPI evaluates teams based on a combination of winning percentage, strength of schedule, and game results against opponents, creating a transparent system that measures overall team performance throughout the season.
For the Broncos, every match carries significant postseason implications. Unlike traditional polls, the NPI directly impacts NCAA Tournament selection. Following the completion of conference tournaments and the awarding of automatic bids, teams are selected for at-large berths based largely on their NPI ranking within their respective regions.
Competing in the highly competitive Atlantic Region, Fayetteville State is measured against programs from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and Mountain East Conference (MEC). Regional positioning is critical, as only a limited number of teams advance to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
The NCAA's NPI system rewards teams for both winning and playing strong schedules. Because rankings are recalculated throughout the season based on opponents' performances and updated strength-of-schedule metrics, a team's NPI can rise or fall even on days it does not compete.
As the regular season enters its final stretch, the Broncos remain focused on continuing their success in CIAA competition and building a postseason profile capable of earning NCAA Tournament consideration. Strong performances against regional opponents and conference contenders will be especially important as the NCAA evaluates teams for regional selection.
The NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship begins with regional competition, where selected teams compete for a regional title and a spot in the national championship bracket. A strong NPI ranking can significantly enhance a team's chances of securing both tournament entry and favorable seeding.
Fans can follow the Broncos' postseason journey by monitoring weekly NCAA NPI updates as Fayetteville State continues its pursuit of a CIAA championship and an NCAA Division II Tournament berth.
