Fayetteville State Claims Back-to-Back CIAA Bowling Titles

FSU also earned the Highest Overall Team GPA Award

Fayetteville State University claimed its second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Bowling Championship at the Lee-Hi Bowling Lanes in Salem, Virginia over the weekend. The Broncos outperformed a field of eight institutions to acquire their fifth title in program history, defeating Virginia Union University 4-1 in game 14 of the championship bracket.

Paige RockwellPaige Rockwell, a sophomore from Dayton, OH, an All-CIAA performer and Bowler of the Year, was selected as the Tournament MVP after obtaining a four-game average of 197.25. Her teammate, Ericka Reed, also a sophomore from Dayton, OH, was named to the All-Tournament and All-CIAA Team with an average of 183.5. Additionally, Denice Brown, a senior from Fayetteville, NC, was named to the All-Conference Team.

FSU also earned the Highest Overall Team GPA Award with a 3.69 average, in addition to collecting the championship and southern division titles.

During individual play, the Broncos opened the first day of the tournament with wins over Virginia State (885-576), Shaw (847-614), Johnson C. Smith (845-711), and Elizabeth City State (822-656). They closed out the day by sweeping VSU 4-0 in the first round of double-elimination bracket play.

On the second day, the Broncos defeated Livingstone 4-0 to remain in the winner's bracket. After overpowering VUU 4-0 for the first time in the third stage of the bracket, Fayetteville State earned a period of rest to await the winner of the Loser's Bracket for the championship match. 

The VUU Panthers emerged from the bottom portion of the bracket for a chance at the title.

Fayetteville State will await the announcement of its next opponent, which will be revealed during the NCAA Championship Selection Show on NCAA.com at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 27.
