Salisbury, NC – The Fayetteville State women's cross-country program won its first meet of the 2023 season with 24 points at Livingstone's Blue Bear XC Invitational in Salisbury, NC. The men finished second behind Johnson & Wales (NC) by two points.
Repline Cheptoo and Irene Jeptoo led the Broncos with second and third place finishes. Cheptoo ran the 5K course in a time of 20:23 behind Saint Augustine's Abijah Jepkemboi (19:46). Jeptoo was seconds behind in a time of 20:38. Joan Kiplagat finished fifth (20:46) and
Nia Gibson seventh in a time of 21:11.
Hillary Toroitich won the men's 8-kilometer race with a time of 26:07. It was a one-two punch by the Broncos as
Derrick Kipchumba trailed in second place (26:51).
Abel Mengich finished seventh (27:35).
The women's team beat out four CIAA member with St. Augustine's finishing in second place. Johnson C. Smith was fifth ahead of Virginia Union (6
th) and Livingstone (7
th). A total of eight teams and 52 athletes competed in the five-kilometer event.
Fifty-six men ran in the 8K from nine teams. The Broncos finished atop of Virginia Union (4
th), Livingstone (5
th), Saint Augustine's (6
th), Johnson C. Smith (8
th), and Winston-Salem State (9
th).
Fayetteville State will compete in NC State's Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, NC on September 15.
