Fayetteville State Wins 2023 CIAA Bowling Championship

SALEM, VIRGINIA (March 26, 2023) – Fayetteville State University claimed the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Bowling Championship with a 4-0 sweep over Bowie State University at AMF Lee-Hi Lanes in Salem, VA. 

This is the Broncos' fourth conference bowling title and first since 2012. 

FSU's Paige Rockwell was named the Food Lion Women's Bowling Tournament MVP in addition to receiving all-tournament honors. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team were Jayda Gignac and Cecelia Chafin.

Bowie State finished as conference runner-up for the first time in six years while Shaw University claimed third-place honors. 

Day two of the Championship Weekend began with round 2 featuring the winner's bracket: FSU, JCSU, SU, and BSU while VSU, VUU, ECSU, and LC battled it out in the loser's bracket in hopes of bowling another round. 

BSU jumped to an early 1-0 lead with a 172-155 win in game one. FSU would then answer with a 189-136 victory in game two to tie the series at 1-1. The Broncos would seize ultimately secure the victory, by winning the next three games by scores of 145-129, 214-129, and 202-147, respectively.  

The Broncos' 4-1 series win would send the Bulldogs to the loser's bracket to face the winner of match 12. 

Bowie State went on to sweep Shaw 4-0 in the Loser's Bracket with scores of 167-119, 165-123, 210-145, and 180-144 to send them to the championship game for a rematch against Fayetteville State.   

The final match featured regular season division winners Bowie State (North) and Fayetteville State (South). 

Fayetteville State wasted no time in the championship game by sweeping the defending champs 4-0. The Broncos' scores against the Bulldogs were 177-161, 191-154, 175-146, and 192-163. 

Fayetteville State will now advance to represent the conference at the 2023 NCAA National Collegiate Bowling Championship. Seeding for the national championship tournament will be determined on Wednesday, March 29 at 4 p.m. Eastern time and can be viewed at https://www.ncaa.com/sports/bowling.
