Bowie, MD – The Fayetteville State bowling program went 9-0 against the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division this weekend at the final conference event leading up to the Championship tournament. Angel Pope (a graduate student from Hope Mills. NC) led the Broncos with a 189.29 pin average over seven games.
Five Broncos finished within the top ten of individual play. Pope's average ranked second overall behind Shaw University's Brooke Smith, who bowled nine games with a 193 average. Freshman Paige Rockwell (Dayton, OH) also participated in the seven games and placed third overall with a 185.71 average. Senior Cecilia Chafin (Fayetteville, NC) ranked fourth with her 175.5 average over six games. Denise Brown (Sophomore – Fayetteville, NC) and Katrina Lowe (Sophomore – Fayetteville, NC) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Brown bowled a 163.86 average in seven games and Lowe hit a 160.4 average in five games.
Pope scored the highest game for FSU when she rolled a 231 in game six against Shaw. She scored her first 200+ game on the first day of competition with a 210 in game three versus Shaw. Rockwell knocked down 223 pins against Johnson C. Smith and Chafin recorded a 215 in the Livingstone game.
Fayetteville State opened the three days of competition with a sweep of Johnson C. Smith (826-600 and 825-634) and Livingstone (826-566 and 822-591). The final score versus Shaw did not count due to the Bears only traveling four bowlers.
On the second day, the Broncos defeated J.C. Smith (836-700 and 924-692) and Livingstone (839-504) to complete the slate of individual games.
In Baker's play, FSU had to go to extra frames to defeat the JCSU Golden Bulls 876-834. With the additional pins, the Broncos scored 102 to JCSU's 60. The Broncos dropped Livingstone 865-607 for the 9-0 weekend record.
