Greensboro, NC – Fayetteville State's men's and women's cross-country teams do it again. Both programs finished first at the Greensboro XC Invitational at the Hagan Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, NC. The Broncos won the men's 8K over four other programs with 28 points and an average time of 28:32. The women ran an average 21:44 5K in the victory with 25 points.
The women beat rival Winston-Salem State by 21 points. The Rams averaged 22:01 and scored 46 points. WSSU's Vanessa Jones was the first individual to complete the 5-kilometer course in 20:30.9 but the Broncos' Mercy Chemutai and Brenda Cheboi were not far behind finishing third and fourth. Chemutai ran 21:14.3 and Cheboi was in at 21:41.7.
Fayetteville State had five runners finish in the top ten. Four of the five finished together in a line. Behind Cheboi, Nia Gibson was sixth overall (21:49.2) for five points. Aaliyah Saunders ran 21:58.9 for six points while captain Sierra Beasley scored seven points with a time of 22:00.7.
A total of 35 individuals, which makes up five teams, completed the course. The Broncos led over WSSU (2nd place), Saint Augustine's (third), and Livingstone (fourth). William Peace finished last.
FSU's men's team defeated St. Augustine's (2nd), Livingstone (3rd), William Peace, and Elizabeth City State.
The Broncos locked up the top three spots with Hillary Toroitich beating the 8-kilometer course in 23:30.7. Derrick Kipchumba was two-point-seven seconds behind in 23:32 minutes. Abel Mengich finished third in 28:08.2. Brian Kiptanui closed out the top-five finishers with a time of 28:53.6.
Fayetteville State will compete in the Cedric Walker HBCU Cross Country Challenge on Saturday, October 1 in Cary, NC. The race will be held at the Wakemed Soccer Park with a 9:00 am start.
