
Salem, VA – Fayetteville State University stepped on the Green Hill Park course in Salem, Virginia with a mission after missing last season due to COVID; pick up where FSU left off. The Broncos did just that after winning its fourth consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Cross-Country Championship.
The task was not an easy task with stiff competition coming from Winston-Salem State and Virginia State. FSU's
Mercy Chemutai earned her second All-CIAA Team honor with a fourth-place finish, out of 62 competitors, with a career-best 6-kilometer time of 20:57.
WSSU had three runners to finish in the top 10: taking second, eighth, and ninth. With eagerness, the points were beginning to add up. The Broncos had four points and the Rams with 19 points after three of the five scoring finishers crossed the line.
Destiny Stevons was the second Bronco to cross at 11
th place. That gave FSU 15 points to WSSU's 19.
Sierra Beasley followed right behind her for 12
th and a total of 27 points.
Mya Johnson finished two spots later and a team total of 41.
Shaw University had a total of 21 points after three runners and was on the lookout for their fourth runner. The Bears' Michelle Blaha maneuvered her way from a tied third place at the 1K mark to first after 1.5M. She went on to win the race in 20:07.2.
Fayetteville State's second wave ran together in a bunch with a Shaw runner in the mix. Stevons and Beasley finished with three seconds between each other. Shaw's third runner finished 13
th and the remainder of the scoring Broncos crossed the line for the championship title.
Mya Johnson placed 14
th in a time of 21:43.6 and
Aaliyah Saunders was 15
th in the exact three seconds behind.
Aleena Cruz-Coleman placed 16
th with no points in 21:50.7. Her place helped displace the Rams' fourth and fifth runner who finished 19
th and 21
st.
Mylasia Pratt finished 28
th for the Broncos.
The top 15 finishers earn All-CIAA honors, thus, all scoring runners for Fayetteville State are on the All-Conference Team. Joining Chemutai are Stevons, Beasley, Johnson, and Saunders.
Virginia State had 44 points after four finishers. Their fourth runner was almost in a tie with Winston's fourth place finisher.
Fayetteville State will venture back to campus as Champions for the fourth time in the institution's cross-country history. Winston-Salem State finished second with 59 points and Virginia State was third with 63.
The Fayetteville State men's team finished 6
th out of 10 teams. Charles Pumba finished 24
th overall and
Jaylaan Poe was 40
th.
Christian Williams crossed at 42
nd.
Ivan Delgardo and
David Riddy finished 43
rd and 58
th, correspondingly.
