Forest Park, GA – The Fayetteville State women finished a weekend of bowling ranked tenth overall at The National Bowling Association (TNBA) HBCU Invitational in Forest Park, Georgia.
The event hosted by Fun Time Bowl brought together 16 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to compete over three days. The format consisted of five five-game Baker sets Friday, five traditional games Saturday and three rounds of best-of-seven Baker matches Sunday. Combined pin-fall from Friday and Saturday's rounds determined seeding for Sunday's bracket play.
Alabama state finished the weekend with a 12-1 record, while Florida A&M went 11-2.
Fayetteville State finished the event with an overall record of 7-6 and a tenth-place ranking.
The Broncos (49-15 on the season) finished the first day of bowling with a 4-1 Baker record. After losing the first match (937-802) to Southern University, FSU completed the day with a four-win streak, capturing wins over Texas Southern (901-883), Bethune Cookman (937-714), Alabama A&M (853-796), and Coppin State (826-778).
Senior
Savannah Starling led Broncos in head-to-head competition on Saturday with 929 pins. She opened play with a 208 in the 917-728 win over Grambling State and had a 191 pin-count in the 862-959 loss to Jackson State. Starling surpassed the 200-mark in the 832-627 victory over Livingstone with a 204 score. Savannah had the Broncos' highest score of 171 in the 782-748 defeat over Johnson C. Smith.
Savannah Starling's 185.80 average ranked her 17
th overall.
Freshman
Cecilia Chafin led the team with a 192-count in the 781-883 loss to Alabama State. Chafin ranked 34
th overall with an 855-pin count and 171 average.
Angel Pope finished one pin behind Chafin.
FSU entered the final day of competition ranked eighth and faced off against No. 7 Norfolk State in the best-out-of-seven format. Falling 4-1, Fayetteville State almost went the distance in the next match to No. 10 Alabama A&M. The Broncos rolled the highest baker game of the tournament with a 256-count but fell upon hardship as the Bulldogs won the match 4-2.
In the final match-up of the tournament, the Broncos fell 4-1 to Morgan State who secured the ninth-place finish.
Fayetteville state finished the weekend with a total count of 8,493 pins and a 169.9 average.
