FSU Bowling Falls 4-2 in CIAA Championship to Bowie State

Virginia Beach, Va. – Fayetteville State made its way to the Finals of the CIAA Bowling Championship and succumbed to the defending champs of Bowie State University 4-2 at the AMF Lynnhaven Lanes in Virginia Beach, Va.  Brittany Worthy (Durham, N.C.) was named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.
 
The Broncos survived elimination in the first round of the double-elimination Championship tourney with a 4-2 (best-of-seven series) 975-909 victory over No. 2 Bowie State to set up final winner-take-all.
 
Fayetteville State opened the final round with a 165-135 victory over BSU and extended its lead to 2-0 with a 190-177 second game. The Bulldogs captured a win in the third game with a 152-136 advantage.
 
In the fourth game, the two institutions stood at a 92-92 after the sixth frame, which carried over to a 110-110 tie in the seventh.
 
Cheyenne Stahnke dropped nine pins and missed the tenth pin in the eighth frame. FSU held a 119-118 lead after Bowie's No. 3 bowler was shy of nine pins with her first ball and finished the frame with eight pins total.
 
Savannah Starling knocked down a strike and BSU's No. 4 had a spare after nine pins on her first attempt.
 
Brittany Worthy closed out the tenth frame with a 9-ball on her first attempt but missed picking up the spare with her second ball. Bowie State's Diamond Carter, the Championship MVP, closed out the game with a spare and seven pins to even the series at 2-2 with the 154-147 game.
 
The pendulum swing of momentum went in favor of the Bulldogs when Fayetteville State failed to pickup a spare in the 10th frame. FSU had collected five consecutive strikes from the third frame to the seventh frame. The Broncos left pins standing in the first, eighth, and tenth frame. Bowie hit its second strike of the game in the ninth frame which led to a turkey (3 strikes) with Carter's second ball. Her eight pins on the final ball gave the Bulldogs a 190-187 win and a 3-2 advantage.
 
Feeling a little deflated, the Broncos had five spares in the first six frames. Veronica Colon-Santiago placed a strike in the seventh frame.
 
To this point, Bowie State was alive with four spares and a strike. The Bulldogs finished with another spare in the eighth when the Broncos left one pin standing. In the ninth frame both teams went strike for strike. Diamond Carter took to the lanes first to send the Bowie fans into a frenzy with back-to-back strikes to complete a turkey and seven pins on her final ball for the 191-180 victory and Bowie State's fifth consecutive CIAA Championship title.

Fayetteville State had a tall task in the second day of competition after finishing 2-1 the first day. The first item on the agenda was to take on the No. 3 seed Virginia State. After a 1-1 tie, the Broncos went on a three-game tear by scores of 167-155, 179-128, and 154-125 for a 4-1 series. FSU won the first game 201-129 and VSU won the second 159-143. Fayetteville State advanced to the second elimination game with an 844-696 victory.
 
Fayetteville State took down the No. 4 seed Virginia Union 4-1 to advance into the championship round. The Broncos went straight in with a 3-0 advantage, winning 185-103, 179-125, and 166-156. The Panthers woke up in the fourth game with a 170-157 win, but the Broncos put them out of contention with a 233-145 win in the fifth set. FSU laid down seven strikes and two spares in the final game. The game started with a turkey (three strikes) and a spare. The team dropped four consecutive strikes and a spare to blow the game away 920 to 699 for a chance to play for a fourth CIAA title.
