FSU Bowling Finished 2-1 in First Day of CIAA Bowling Championship

Virginia Beach, Va. – The Fayetteville State bowling team is still alive in the CIAA Double-Elimination Championship bracket at the AMF Lynnhaven Bowling Lanes in Virginia Beach, Va.

11809In a best-of-seven Baker Match format, the No. 1 seeded Broncos went the distance in the opening round to defeat No. 8 Saint Augustine's 4-2. Fayetteville State won by a pin-count of 1,052 to 937. Both teams tied the first game with scores of 157-157. The Falcons captured the first victory with a second game score of 148 to 125. FSU countered in the third by a game of 156-104 to tie the series at 1-1. SAU dropped five more pins than the Broncos in the fourth game to go up 2-1 with a 139-134 win.

After a quick motivational moment by the CIAA Bowling Coach of the Year Robert Henderson, Fayetteville State pulled out three straight victories to advance in the winner's bracket for a face-off against the Panthers of Virginia Union.  The Broncos finished off the Falcons by scores of 170-137, 150-114, and 160-138.

11810The momentum of the victory carried Fayetteville State to a 154-121 win over VUU in the first game. But, having played one extra game than Virginia Union, fatigue began to creep in on the Broncos. FSU began leaving open frames and not finishing out with spares. The No. 4 Panthers won four consecutive games for the 4-1 victory (747 pins to 716 pins). Fayetteville State lost the second and third games by eight pins (162-154 and 157-149). The last game was by 22 pins, 177-156.

With a slight break before entering the loser's bracket and a rematch against Saint Augustine's, another motivational moment sparked the Broncos to a 4-0 sweep over the Falcons to survive another day in the championship bracket.

11811Fayetteville State will open the second day of play at the Lynnhaven Lanes with an 11:30 am match against the Trojans of Virginia State University.

No. 3 VSU entered the loser's bracket after a second-round loss to No. 2 Bowie State University. The Trojans took an early 3-0 lead over the defending champs, but the Bulldogs battled back to win 4-3.

Bowie State defeated Virginia Union 4-1 to remain unbeaten in the double-elimination championship. Virginia Union will await the winner of the FSU/VSU match. Bowie State will take on the winner of the Panther match.
