Jared Chinn named the 2016 CIAA Golfer of the Year; he is the second consecutive Bronco to claim the honor in as many years

Charlotte, NC -- The Fayetteville State University men's golf team improved by 12 strokes from day one to day two to shoot 315 on the second and final day of the 2016 CIAA Championships to finish third at the par 72, 6,717-yard Larkhaven Golf and Country Club on April 17th. FSU shot 327 on day one for a two-day total of 642 (+66).

Chowan claimed their first CIAA title by firing a score of 634 (+58) to conclude the tournament six strokes better than last year's champion, Livingstone College. The Blue Bears finished in second place with a score of 640 (+64).

Virginia Union University finished behind Fayetteteville State in fourth with a total of 669 (+93). Elizabeth City State University (689, +113) placed fifth, while Virginia State University (765, +189) and Johnson C. Smith University (814, +238) took sixth and seventh place, respectively. Saint Augustine's University had the eighth and final spot with a score of 972 (+396).

Philip Harrison of Livingstone won the individual low medalist crown with a two-day score of 151 +7 (73, 78). Harrison finished just one stroke better than sophomore Jared Chinn (Ft. Bragg, NC) and DeJuan Powell of Johnson C. Smith, who both shot 152.

Chinn earned the 2016 CIAA Golfer of the Year Award with an average of 74.5 per round for the season. Chinn won the individual low medalist honors at the CIAA Southern and Northern Divisional Tournaments earlier this year. This makes the second consecutive year Fayetteville State has claimed the CIAA Golfer of the Year trophy. Brandon Jobe won last year.

Senior Christopher Jackson (Raeford, NC) completed the event in sixth overall. Jackson shot 76 on day two, four strokes better than his first day score for a total of 156 (+12).

Freshmen Isaiah Shaw (Altamonte Springs, FL) and Christian Villanueva (Fayetteville, NC) finished t-13th and t-17th, respectively on the overall leaderboard. Shaw improved five strokes on the final day for a total of 165 (+21). Villanueva concluded the event with a total score of 169 (87, 82).

Sophomore Austen Parlett (Hope Mills, NC) placed 28th overall with a total score of 187 (94, 93).

In addition to being named CIAA Golfer of the Year, Chinn was also selected to the All-CIAA Team and the CIAA All-Tournament Team. Jackson and Shaw also received selections to the All-CIAA Team.
