FAYETTEVILLE STATE CROSS COUNTRY FINISHED STRONG AT ADIDAS XC CHALLENGE

Cary, NC -- The Fayetteville State University men's and women's cross country teams opened the season at the 2015 Adidas Cross Country Challenge hosted by North Carolina State University. The men's team finished 10th overall, while the women placed 15th in the competition.

The Broncos men's team tallied 290 points in the 5K run with a total time of 2:03:08.50. Freshman Richard Prudente-Bernal (Fayetteville, NC) had the top finish for FSU with time of 18:16. He finished 58th out of 101 runners. Sophomore Samuel Quinones-Romer (Fayetteville, NC) had the second best finish for the Broncos (79th) with a time of 19:47.

Senior Timothy Haggie (Memphis, TN) finished in 94th (23:14), followed by Nicholas Phipps-Evans (Washington, D.C.) in 99th (30:54), and junior Rodney Adams (Charlotte, NC) in 100th place with a time of 30:55.

Luis Vargas won the event as an unattached runner with a time of 14:38. N.C. State had the best team finish with 22 team points. Six runners place in the top 15, including two in the top five. In addition to NCSU, UNC-Chapel Hill (2nd), UNC-Greensboro (3rd), North Carolina Central (6th), and fellow CIAA institutions Shaw (8th) and Winston-Salem State (9th) all competed in the event.

On the women's side, FSU recorded 458 points in the 5K with a total time of 2:14:52.50. Senior Doreen Richardson (Salisbury, NC) clocked a time of 20:35 to finish first among the Lady Broncos. Richardson placed 73rd out of 152 runners. Junior Makayla Williams (Raleigh, NC) finished second for FSU in 25:07 for 119th place.

Freshman Kayla Phifer (Greensboro, NC), junior Nia-Tayler Clark (Bowie, MD), and freshman Kara Straite (Greensboro, NC) rounded out the Fayetteville State runners in the women's 5K. Phifer had a time of 27:46 (128th), followed by Clark in 27:53 (130th), and then Straite finished in 33:29 (148th).

Ryen Frazier of North Carolina State placed first in the event (16:06). The Wolfpack also won the team event with 19 points in a total time 1:25:03.00. NCSU had five runners finish in the top 10. There were 18 teams competing in the women's 5K.

Both the Fayetteville State men's and women's teams will compete in the Greensboro College Invitational on Saturday, September 26th. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Hagan Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, NC.
