March 22, 2015 Chesapeake, VA - The Fayetteville State University women's bowling team advances to the winner's bracket of the 2015 CIAA Championships after a 4-1 win over Saint Augustine's during baker's matches at the AMF Western Branch Lanes on Saturday, March 21st.
FSU collected their CIAA Southern Division trophy after a perfect 30-0 season on Friday, March 20th. Senior Crystal Mujica (Fayetteville, NC) and sophomore Jasmin Aponte (Fayetteville, NC) were also named to the All-CIAA Bowling Team.
Along with the No. 4 seeded Lady Broncos, Bowie State (No. 1 seed), Virginia State (No. 2 seed), and Shaw (No. 6 seed) will compete in the winner's bracket on the final day of competition.
The Lady Bears stunned No. 3 seed Elizabeth City State University in the first round. Shaw topped ECSU 4-2 in the double-elimination Baker bracket, which will determine the conference champion.
The championship meet concludes Sunday, March 22, with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. The first set of matches begins at 9 a.m. Catch all of the action on the CIAA.com, where Sunday's matches will be livestreamed.
On Sunday, Fayetteville State squares off against Virginia State and Shaw will take on Bowie State in the winners' bracket. Elizabeth City State faces Virginia Union and Saint Augustine's goes up against Johnson C. Smith in the elimination bracket.
Bowie State earned the top seed by amassing the highest pin count after Baker matches were completed in the preliminary round earlier Saturday. Seeding was determined by the total pinfall in preliminary team matches Friday and preliminary Baker matches Saturday.
Bowie State tallied 8,316 total pins followed by Virginia State with 8,097 pins. Elizabeth City State was third with 7,987 pins and Fayetteville State placed fourth with 7,674 pins.
Saint Augustine's earned the fifth seed with 7,614 pins and Shaw was sixth with 6,984 pins. Johnson C. Smith was seventh with 6,964 pins and Virginia Union was eighth with 6,832 pins.
