CLAYTON - As the scores continued to come in, there was little drama about which team was going to win the CIAA Southern Division Tournament.
But Fayetteville State's Brandon Jobe (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) had some waiting to do.
After carding a 3-over-par 74 in the second round at Pine Hollow Golf Course, Jobe, the tournament's first-round leader, found himself in a tie at 4-over 146 with Virginia State's Stephen Genchi. It was only after a scorecard playoff determined Jobe the tournament's medalist that the Broncos could celebrate not one, but two big wins on the 6,454-yard course.
Fayetteville State, the first-round leader by 11 shots, put together a tidy 309 as a team for a two-day total of 608 (299-309) to win by 10 strokes over second-place Winston-Salem State (310-308-618). Chowan, which had the low round of the day with a 303, finished third at 626.
It is the third tournament win in three starts for Fayetteville State this season. The Broncos have won 25 CIAA championships, including 10 of the last 14.
The Rams' Zach Sheets, who trailed Jobe by one shot at the end of play on Monday, finished third with a 147 (73-74), joining Virginia State's Adam Clary (4th, 76-75-151) and Chowan's Cliff Forbes (Tied 5th, 80-72-152) to make up the all-tournament team. (Forbes was named to the all-tournament team by virtue of a scorecard playoff.)
Jake Barge (Jr., Fayetteville, N.C.), who had won in the first two starts for Fayetteville State this season, was also tied for fifth after rounds of 74 and 78 for a 152 total. The Broncos' Jedidiah Frazier (So. Havelock, N.C.) was ninth after rounds of 78 and 76 for a 154 total. Teammate Lincoln Jackson (Sr., Southern Pines, N.C.; 75-81-156) was tied for 11th and Mike Wallace (Sr., Fayetteville, N.C.) was tied for 25th (81-86-167) to round out Fayetteville State's scoring.
The Broncos will take part in next week's CIAA Northern Tournament in Petersburg, Va.
