HAWKINS, PORTEE STAND OUT FOR BRONCOS IN FIRST MEET

LUMBERTON - Fayetteville State's Ernest Hawkins brought home a 12th-place finish in the Broncos' first cross country meet of the season, the UNC Pembroke Cross Country Invitational, over the weekend.

Hawkins completed the 8-kilometer course at Luther Britt Park in 30 minutes, 25.84 seconds to finish as the Broncos' top runner. Fayetteville State finished fourth in the five-team event, which was won by UNC Pembroke.

Britton Crum crossed the finish line in 17th for the Broncos, recording a time of 32:05.97, while Ervin Brinkley (34:56.16) was 22nd. Joshua Morales (37:05.89) was 25th and James Glenn (40:59.95) was 29th.

Zach Bayless (26:44.97) won the event for UNCP, which finished with 22 points to win the meet. St. Andrews (58) was second, Methodist (68) third, FSU (94) fourth and Coker College (97) was fifth.

In the women's meet, Tamikka Portee was the Lady Broncos' top finisher, completing the 6-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 30.33, seconds to come in ninth overall. Kenya Vice (30:36.61) was 25th and Mahlia Blue (41:35.99) was 33rd.

UNCP, which claimed positions 2-through-8, won with 20 points. Coker (59) was second while St. Andrews (70) was third and Methodist (97) was fourth. Coker's Kendyl Seawright won the women's meet in 24:13.39.

The Broncos run again at the 26TH Annual Greensboro Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.
